Rangers SS, 2023 World Series MVP Corey Seager will undergo season-ending sports hernia surgery

Texas shortstop Corey Seager will undergo surgery to repair a sports hernia, ending the All-Star’s third season with Rangersgeneral manager Chris Young said Thursday.

Seager was examined by doctors in Arizona earlier this week and is expected to undergo the procedure on Friday, Young said. It is Seager’s second sports hernia surgery in the last 12 months, this one on the opposite side of the abdomen from the one where the first surgery was performed.

“Obviously a tough decision, but given where we are at this point in the season, it seemed like the wise decision to make a full recovery, have a strong offseason and be ready for spring training,” Young said ahead of the first of four games against sailors.

Seager was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Sept. 4 due to discomfort in his right hip that he had been dealing with for about a month.

The reigning World Cup MVP missed almost all of spring training after undergoing surgery in January to repair a sports hernia. Last week, Seager said he hopes to play again this season, but is also aware that he will need the entire offseason to prepare for 2025.

“You can’t miss two offseasons,” Seager said. “You have to get healthy and get back to work and get back in shape. Last year I didn’t have any growth in the season. That’s something you have to have.”

Seager hit .278 with 30 home runs and 74 RBIs in 123 games. He hit 30 homers for the third straight season since signing a 10-year, $325 million free agent deal with Texas.

After his short spring training, Seager had just two homers and eight RBIs in the first 29 games of the regular season. But the 30-year-old has hit .296 with 27 homers and 66 RBIs since May 3.

“Corey played through some discomfort and is so important to us and our future, asking him to continue playing and finish the season in pain where he could compromise himself or make himself worse, didn’t make sense,” Young said. “The right decision here was to go for surgery and make a full recovery.”
